Day 1: Raising Animal Welfare Standards…Poultry Farming

Battery cages are cruel to chickens as they confine them cruelly, which compromises their welfare .Chickens reared under battery cages live up to two years without getting out of the cages. This means that they are restricted from accessing natural sunlight which is cruel.Battery cages also lead to chickens losing their feathers due to constant contact /rubbing with the cage wires which is a cause of concern in terms of welfare. Today we conducted a training in Chinhoyi at Orange Grove Hotel which was attended by a councilor , veterinary officers ,village headmens and farmers .We discussed various animal welfare issues including the detrimental effects of battery cages .We also discussed on the challenges that farmers are facing in poultry farming. We are pleased to note that there is a positive response to our trainings by respected individuals /authorities in the society which can help us to efficiently engage with the people on the issues of animal cruelty. We hope that our mandate will be fulfilled which is to reduce the suffering of animals and enhance the interests of non-human animals through law.#farmedanimalslaw#livestock
