Did you know that battery cages violates egg-laying hens’ welfare. Battery cages cause boredom and frustration to egg-laying hens and that even affect egg production. Due to space restrictions egg-laying hens develop abnormal practices such as feather pecking and vent pecking. These practices have a negative impact on the health of chickens which result in beak trimming. Beak trimming involves removing a portion of the beak with a red hot blade or infrared beam. This method cause excruciating pain and distress to the hens as the beak is considered to be a complex organ which contains extensive nerves and receptors. Beak trimming affects the feeding ability of the hens. Because of lack of exercises egg-laying hens are prone to osteoporosis (keel bone fractures).Osteoporosis results in fragile skeleton and increased risk of bone breakage. Bone breakages are painful to hens. Battery cage system lead to a foot condition called hyper keratosis. This foot condition limits movements of the hens.
